What are jardinières?
In times gone by, the jardinière was primarily a container for flowers, taking on ever-changing forms over the decades. The jardinière is regarded as the predecessor of the modern flower box or planter. In south-west Germany, the term ‘jardinière’ is still used today. They are often seen hanging in special brackets on balconies or terraces. The word ‘jardinière’ comes from French and roughly translates as ‘gardener’. The meaning of ‘jardinière’ is intended to suggest the freedom to simply plant flowers and other plants in this planter, just as one would in a real garden. Even before the Art Nouveau era, the jardinière was already an integral part of the interior décor of premium households. Here, it was adorned with real flowers or other ornate decorative objects. Around the turn of the century, and thus during the heyday of Art Nouveau, the jardinière was increasingly filled with real flowers; the compact shape of the bowl made it easy to move around the home. It was during this period that the term ‘jardinière’ also became established for the so-called table centrepiece, which could be found as a decorative bowl on every middle-class dining table and here, too, offered an attractive setting for plants of all kinds. Variants made of silver or other metals were particularly common among the original jardinières; over time, these evolved into rather simple and less elegant planters for indoor use.
